Quebec Midsummer Meeting, June 25 2017

La Montagne Bleu, 370, rang 3 nord

St-Ferdinand-d’Halifax, QC  G0N 1N

Theme of the Day:  Biodynamics in the Garden

The Association de biodynamie  du Québec (ABQ) will be celebrating this year’s Summer Solstice and St. John’s Tide at the charming farm of Chantal Élie and Yoland Leclerc in the hilly countryside of Central Quebec near St. Ferdinand.  The Blue Mountain Farm is situated south of the St. Lawrence River, halfway between Victoriaville and Thetford Mines.

About 150 acres are devoted to market vegetables interspersed with fruiting trees and shrubs,  poultry, an apiary, meadows and woods.  Yoland acquired the property in 1977 and for 20 years specialized in raspberries and wild blueberries.  Bees and hives were an integral part of the domain from the beginning.  With the arrival of Chantal in 2001 more production was added: eggs, other small fruit and market vegetables such as  garlic, lettuces, mesclun, summer and winter squash.  And, more importantly came the addition of Biodynamic agriculture, which continues to inspire Chantal and Yoland.  They are staunch supporters of the ABQ.  Chantal was Secretary for many years and still maintains Membership.

Over the years, different products appeared:  jams and preserves, culinary herbs, choucroute, candles, soaps and ointments.  At the moment the farm is concentrated on the apiary with its honey and associated products, raising chickens and growing small fruit.

The day will begin discussing the chosen theme and visiting the farm.  Before the potluck lunch we will take part in an exercise of Living Thinking:  the bond between the Human Being and the Kingdoms of Nature.  After lunch the compost will receive the 6 Compost Preparations, followed by a discussion of the Planting Calendar.

As always, bring a dish to share at lunchtime, plus utensils for eating.  There is protected camping space for those who wish to arrive the day before, and farms are invited to bring their products for sale.  No domestic animals please!
